Damn. There is so much resonance here, you’ve added to my stirrings about how to handle writing online as a therapist in training and as a human walking the line of a public and private life. There are a number of things I’m avoiding writing about, or am sort of trying to write my way around without coming right out and saying the thing; thank you for sharing some words that come so close to the shape of one of them.

Thank you so much Susan. Your support, from the earliest days of my working life (!!), has always been so vital and encouraging. And the fact that you are now a paid subscriber to my Substack is incredibly generous. Thank you so much.

Ahh, yes. The Beatles. Tell me how you learned of them (because you are far too young to have grown up in the 60s). I cannot even say which of their iconic songs stand out to me as anywhere near a ‘favorite’.

And Sylvia Plath — wow. Good for you. I wonder what resonates with you—personally and as a writer—in her prose?

My God I wish I could live a lifetime to catch up on my reading!

Regards,

Dianne

Hi Dianne,

My dad taught me to love The Beatles at a very young age :) They were always playing in our house and my dad still has almost all of their original records in his collection. For me it's a tie between "Please Please Me" and "Strawberry Fields."

I am embarrassed to admit that I am probably more familiar with the Beatles than with the whole of Plath's oeuvre, but I am inspired by her honesty and her rage. She was such a careful observer of the world.

Thanks so much for taking the time to read and comment.

Allison

I truly appreciate this opportunity to glimpse inside your soul, to experience some of your pain, but more than that, to savor your words and meet your talent as an expressive, contemplative writer. Allison, I am honored to know you and to experience life with you.

Glad you’re here sharing your story Allison. And thank you for the ace list of recommendations, I’m a big fan of Rebekah Taussig too. I became disabled later in life through MS, and I’ve been sharing my story here. I started off doing it as something I thought might help others, but I’m also finding it helps me to process the complex thoughts and emotions that come along with it.
