Hello and welcome to the paid edition of the intangibles! Thank you to my paid supporters for supporting the research, writing and time that goes into this newsletter. Together we are making the writing and publishing industry a more transparent, inclusive and welcoming place. (If you identify as a writer with a disability and a subscription isn't affordable for you at the moment, please email me and I will gift a year-long subscription.)

Hi writers,

Playwright Deonna Kelli Sayed has put together a community conversation in support of her new solo show American Body, and I’m honored to be a part of it.

Writer James Tate Hill, poet Matthew Johnson, writer and media producer Audrey Smith, activist Juliette Faroe and I will be talking about how body size, race, gender, and ability impacts our sense of belonging in America.

Text: American Bodies: A Community Conversation, October 9th, 6:30pm, Stephen D. Hyers Theatre

I hope you’ll join us for this free event on Monday, October 9th at 6:30pm in the Stephen Hyers theatre in downtown Greensboro, North Carolina. I think it’s going to be a really dynamic and timely discussion. Register here.

Written by Deonna Kelli Sayed and directed by Nicole Lungerhausen, American Body debuts October 12th-15th in partnership with Creative Greensboro and the Arts Council of Greater Greensboro.

I’ll also be leading a mini version of my Writing the Body class as a part of visual artist Jean Gray Mohs’ Object as Vessel/Process as Catharsis Exhibit taking place October 16th - 28th, 2023 at the Greensboro Project Space. More information coming soon.

I interviewed Jean Gray for my Creatives in Conversation series in July of 2022, and the interview is worth revisiting. Her artwork, and the way she sees the world, always makes me think and I am so excited to be a part of this collaborative and expansive exhibition that she’s curated.

Ribs and Lung, original work by Jean Gray Mohs. You can check out more of her artwork here.

And now for the main event: each month I offer a writing prompt for my paid subscribers. These prompts are meant to jumpstart creative thinking and give guidance to your writing practice. In my experience my prompts tend to bring out some pretty interesting writing. I shared this prompt with one of my classes a few weeks ago and one of the writers said, “wow, the minute you gave us this prompt I knew exactly what I wanted to write about.” It’s OK if that doesn’t happen to you — some prompts arrive at just the right time, and some don’t — but I do think it’s a juicy prompt with a lot of avenues for exploration.

Let’s begin:
