Hi, readers of the intangibles! I’m Allison Kirkland, and this publication was created to celebrate and explore the world of creative nonfiction and the writing life. I’m so glad you’re here.
Today marks two years of the intangibles, so if you’ve ever considered upgrading to a paid subscription, now would be the perfect time!

Hi writers and readers,
Two years ago today I launched this Substack the intangibles. I’m not going to lie, June 30th is a very random day for an anniversary. I sort of wish I’d launched this publication in September, which always has a certain back-to-school energy, or in January, which brings to mind newness and fresh starts.
But instead, this anniversary is smack dab in the middle of summer, when it feels like everyone is at the beach. (I guess I know how all those summer birthday babies feel now.)
In any case, I’m celebrating. And as part of the celebration I have commissioned a new logo for this publication, courtesy of illustrator Morgan Riker.
Thank you so much to everyone in the past 2 years who has read this publication, shared it with others, who has commented on it, who has connected with me via Substack because of it.
And thank you especially to my paid subscribers who ensure that I can spend time on this publication. I treasure this little space I've made on the internet.
Each month I offer a writing prompt and a reading recommendation or writing exercise for my paid subscribers, geared toward writers of creative nonfiction and memoir.
My hope is that these prompts and recommendations can be a resource for writers who might not currently be attending a writing class, but who still want to engage with the creative nonfiction world and with their writing practice on their own schedule.
The first step to finding authority and authenticity in your writing, after all, is to write and read. Take some time to notice what resonates with you, notice what you like and what nags at you in other essays, poems and books. Write a few lines or paragraphs yourself, within the safe confines of a prompt. You never know what starting these new habits might bring forth.
